We help families that have experienced domestic violence in all forms: physical, emotional, social, psychological, and spiritual. Safety is our greatest value. Our services are kept confidential and free of charge. 

About This Program

Abriendo Puertas was established to provide services and support in a bilingual and bicultural setting for Latinas, including Latina immigrants and their children. 

If you are experiencing domestic violence, Abriendo Puertas can provide emergency shelter to help you find safety. We offer specific resources around the needs of each family and strive to promote healing from the traumatic effects of domestic violence. 

Whether you are currently in or coming from an unsafe situation, Abriendo Puertas will help you to regain your voice, safety, and freedom.

We Provide Support

Transportation
Assistance to and from appointments such as doctors visits, attorneys and court hearing for individuals affected by domestic violence. 
Translation/Interpretation
In person oral interpretation and translation, as well as translating written documentation to provide full understanding for each individual. 
Support Groups
Community groups for both women and children that promote healing and empowerment. 
Planning
Support and resources for future planning such as child care, employment, and housing. 
Medical & Legal
One on one support with medical and legal referrals. Abriendo Puertas will help each survivor-victims in finding their voice and gaining independence. 
Advocacy
Staff dedicated to helping surviviors with their best interest in mind. We value helping survivors-victims in finding their voice and gaining independence.

Lideres

Abriendo Puertas Lideres is committed to promoting domestic violence awareness to the Latino community. This group of survivors participates in a variety of outreach events, presentations, and workshops. Through these efforts, Lideres aim to increase domestic violence education and resources available to Latina women and children in Delaware.

What is domestic violence?
It is a pattern of abusive and controlling behavior in an intimate relationship. 
Is domestic violence only physical?
No, domestic violence is not just physical harm; it is a pattern of abusive behaviors. Examples include continuous jealousy and control, isolationsuch as keeping you from family and friends, sexual assault, financial control. intimidation, withholding legal papers or medication, excessive criticism, threats, manipulation of children, and minimizing or denying the abuse, or blaming the abuse on you. 
Is my information shared with my partner or another agency?
No, at Abriendo Puertas we value privacy and confidentiality. No information is shared without your consent.
Where is Abriendo Puertas located?
Due to our commitment to safety, our shelter location is confidential.
As an immigrant do I have rights?
Yes. Undocumented immigrants who have been victimized may be eligible for protection under immigration laws. Survivors can seek Protection From Abuse orders from Delaware Courts.
