February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

posted Thursday, Feb 16, 2017

Governor John Carney and Lieutentant Governor Bethany Hall-Long signed the annual proclamation declaring February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in Delaware on February 1, 2017, at Shue-Medill Middle School located in the Christiana School District.  Teen dating violence is a subject that is rarely talked about because teens often don't realize they are in unhealthy relationships but statistics show that 23% of female victims first experience intimate partner violence between the ages of 11 and 17.  It is the hope that  Delawareans work this month to increase awareness of this issue and to make sure that teens know that there are resources available.  Children and teens can call the National Dating Abuse Helpline at 1-866-331-9474 or chat with an advocate at http://www.loveisrespect.org.
