Human Trafficking & Awareness Month

Human trafficking is modern day slavery which involves the use of force, fraud and coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex against an individual. It can happen in any community and victims can be of any age, race, gender, nationality, or of any social-economic background. Human trafficking is the second largest and fastest growing organized crime worldwide.

On June 22 2007, the US Senate designated January 11 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. A few years later, on December 22, 2010, President Obama declared January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.  Also, in 2010, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) created the Blue Campaign to be the voice for fighting human trafficking. It was designed to promote public awareness and train law enforcement and other public service providers to recognize indicators of human trafficking and how to report suspicious cases.
